Holiday in the Inland Algarve

TOP ACTIVITIES, HIDDEN SPOTS & PEACEFUL NATURE

Most travellers know the Algarve for its coastline: golden beaches, dramatic cliffs and turquoise water. But just a short drive inland, you’ll find a completely different Algarve — quieter, greener, more authentic and full of surprising activities. Right in the middle of this countryside lies Vila do Ouro, a boutique resort that makes the perfect base for exploring the inland Algarve.

Activities in the Inland Algarve

The countryside is ideal for travellers who enjoy nature, adventure and authentic Portuguese culture. Popular inland activities include:

  • Jeep Safaris in the Algarve
  • Buggy & Quad Tours
  • Mountain biking (COOLBIKES delivers rental bikes directly to Vila do Ouro)
  • Hiking & Walking Trails

Hiking from Vila do Ouro

One of the best hikes starts right at the resort: the trail to Paderne Castle.

  • Around 4 hours round‑trip
  • Ruins dating back to 1100
  • Roman bridge
  • Old watermill
  • Beautiful flora and fauna

You can even see the castle from our pool terrace.

Other Beautiful Hikes in the Algarve

  • Rocha da Pena (Salir) – rugged nature reserve with peaks up to 450 metres
  • Monchique Mountains – forest trails, a hanging bridge and the summit of Foia at 1000 metres with views over the entire Algarve

Charming Inland Villages

  • Paderne – our local village, just 2 km away
  • Alte – 15 km away, known for its springs, waterfalls and authentic charm

Inland Towns Worth Visiting

  • Silves – former capital of the Algarve with a castle and riverside promenade
  • Loulé – famous Saturday market and the impressive underground salt mine (200 metres deep)
  • Monchique – mountain atmosphere, forests and great restaurants
  • Messines – not touristy, but perfect for a coffee among locals

Swimming in the Inland Algarve

The inland Algarve offers several freshwater swimming spots — a great alternative to the beach:

River near Paderne

Several places along the river are suitable for swimming. Search for “Açude” on Google Maps to find small dams and natural pools. Note: often dry in high summer.

Alte Springs

Natural swimming pools under shady trees, with fresh water and a relaxed local vibe.

Alte Waterfall

A beautiful, iconic spot with clear water and a good workout thanks to the stairs.

Pego de Inferno (Tavira)

A hidden waterfall in the Serra behind Tavira. Adventurous walk and great for swimming.

Santa Clara Dam (Alentejo)

Warm freshwater, multiple swimming spots, about 1.5 hours from Vila do Ouro.

Caldas de Monchique

Not for swimming, but perfect for bathing in healing spring water or enjoying a spa treatment.

After long dry periods, rivers and waterfalls may be dry. The Alte springs almost always have water.

For many guests, it’s exactly this combination that makes their holiday unforgettable.
